Nia locked the sitting-room door behind Grannie and added the security of lowering the bar down across it. Her pounding heart nearly choked her as the barrier settled in place with a heavy thud. She rested her fingers on the coolness of the iron latch and failed to calm herself with a deep breath. None could enter now, whether they possessed keys to her rooms or not. She stared at the door, wishing it would tell her life’s secrets so she wouldn’t feel such an inexperienced fool. For years, she had longed to discover this man was real and now that he was—God help her. What to do now? According to Grannie, her husband waited across the room. The prospects and possibilities both thrilled and terrified her.

“Nia.” Alec's gentle call coaxed her like a loving caress. “Ye have nothing to fear, lass.” He made his way to the decanters lined across the sideboard and held up a glass. “We must toast our future, aye?”

“Aye.” She turned aside and focused on the window. It helped not to look at him. To see his strength. His braw, stormy comeliness. Senses heightened to the point of spinning out of control; she picked up every sound. Every scent. The air tingled with energy. Wine being poured gurgled twice. Two goblets filled. She licked her lips, welcoming the sound. A drink would calm her nerves. A welcomed calming, she dearly needed. Quiet footsteps approached her. The heat of his nearness made her turn and take the glass before he even offered it.

“I thank ye,” she whispered, then hurried to take a long, deep drink, emptying the cup completely. As soon as she swallowed and picked up on her new husband’s amusement, she cringed. Heaven help her. In her haste to seek relief, she had forgotten the toast. He must surely think himself married to a fool. “Forgive me.”

He took her glass and leaned in close. “There is nothing to forgive. Dinna ever apologize for acting true to yer heart, ye ken? I love everything about ye.” He handed her his goblet. “I shall fetch another along with the bottle.”

“Thank ye.” He loved everything about her? A comforting warmth bloomed, then stirred through her, a warmth not caused by the wine.

Bottle cradled in the crook of one arm and glass in hand, he offered his free arm to her. “Shall we sit at the window and watch the sun relinquish its place to the moon?”

Too nervous to speak, she took his arm. A quiet gasp escaped her when he turned and headed for the bedchamber rather than the window at the end of the sitting room.

He paused. “When we pried open the passage to return ye to yer bedchamber, I noticed the room possessed a window with a lovely view of yer grandsire’s cairn and the valley beyond.” He leaned down and forced her to meet his gaze. “I will do nothing ye dinna wish for me to do, m’love. I cherish ye and have no issue waiting until ye are truly ready.
